Being two of Greece’s longest-inhabited islands, Crete and Cyprus are two of the most richly mythological areas the country has to offer, making them the perfect destination for history buffs. Cyprus particularly shares an indelible association with Greek gods and goddesses, with many of its namesakes and sites of interest dedicated to them, and enjoy only a short distance from Cyprus Hotels.

The Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, was said to be born at Paphos, making Paphos one of the most popular attractions for fans of mythology. Adjacent to Paphos is the Akama Peninsula, an area of great natural beauty and splendor, that is associated with both Aphrodite and Adonis. Ares, the Greek god, was jealous of Aphrodite’s love for Adonis, so killed him. Legend states that Aphrodite placed an anemone in every spot where Adonis’s blood was shed, and visitors can see them today in the Akama Peninsula. The site is located nearby several Paphos hotels, making it an easy site for history buffs to explore without trekking too far away.

Crete might not boast as many associations to Greek mythology, but it still offers travelers many sites of interest to visit. The top spot for history enthusiasts is the Palace of Knossos, which is arguably the most important destination to learn about the early Greek civilisation of Minoa. This is also the origin of myths such as the Minotaur, the feared half-man half-bull monster who ate people in his labyrinth, and that of Icarus and Daedalus. The legend goes that Daedalus angered King Minos, who imprisoned him and his son in Icarus in a tall tower by the coast. Daedalus built life-sized wings for them both, and managed to escape from the tower. However, Icarus flew too close to the sun, which caused the wax on his wings to melt, and him to tumble into the ocean. Most Crete hotels will provide tours in their reception or concierge area, helping guests explore this astonishing site.
